GPS-based Tracking in Large Bearing Logistics – Schaeffler Expands Smart-Box System
Introduce reusable systems for transport packaging ✓ Logistics tracking at Schaeffler ✓ Success story of successful implementation

Schaeffler is now focusing on digital traceability in the logistics of large bearing applications. The focus is on expanding the existing Smart-Box system with GPS-based tracking technology. The new function is being used as part of a proof of concept in the field of large bearing applications for wind power with the aim of being able to trace products more precisely and use resources more transparently along the supply chain.
"The Smart-Box becomes an intelligent information carrier thanks to GPS tracking. Real-time transparency makes it possible to monitor bearings seamlessly during transport. This allows us to make logistics processes even more efficient, sustainable, and secure," emphasizes Slawomir Maiczek, who is responsible for the project at Schaeffler, Division Bearings & Industrial Solutions.

Reusable transport containers for large bearings
Schaeffler introduced the Smart-Box system back in 2021. The so-called Smart-Boxes are modular reusable transport containers designed for shipping large-diameter bearings. They replace single-use boxes and support the resource cycle thanks to their reusability. The boxes are based on the dimensions of a Euro pallet and can be stacked. The uniform design allows for simplified storage and reduces complexity in packaging and return transport.
GPS tracking for optimized logistics
The expansion of the system with GPS-Trackers has several advantages. The main focus is on tracking the physical location of the boxes, particularly with regard to circulation times, downtimes, and return processes. The information obtained from the Trackers allows for data-driven management of delivery and return logistics.
In addition to location determination, the Trackers also record other physical parameters such as temperature, humidity, and acceleration. This data provides insights into environmental conditions and possible impacts during handling and transport. From this, it can be deduced how the product is handled along the supply chain.
Currently, around 300 GPS-Trackers are already in use at Schaeffler. The focus is on the transport of main bearing applications in the wind power sector. The Asset Tracking solution is provided by the German supplier SmartMakers. The GPS-Trackers enable precise location tracking and regularly send data to an IoT platform.
The tracking system has been extensively tested and continuously optimized in ongoing operations at Schaeffler for two years. The combination of modular packaging solution and IoT tracking offers a scalable approach to process optimization in industrial goods transport.
